Google will stop scanning user e-mail for advertising targeting

Google does not hide the fact that users ’letters are scanned by a special system in order to better understand a person’s interests. The ultimate goal is to show targeted advertising, which will demonstrate advertising of goods or services needed by a potential buyer. You can, for example, exchange letters, the main theme of which will be cats, and Google will eventually begin to "twist" advertisements related to animals (feed, accessories, etc.) to both recipients.

All this is extremely useful for Google’s advertising partners, but, as you might guess, Gmail users don’t like it too much. More than once or not two different organizations and individuals protested against scanning mail items, arguing that this violates the right to privacy of personal information. Perhaps, Google has listened to the protests, because recently it became known about the termination of the practice of scanning users' letters for advertising targeting.

Ads will still show to users of the free version of Gmail. But for her targeting will not be used letters. The corporation already has a lot of data about each of its customers, so this information will be analyzed so that users receive relevant advertising.

Diana Green, vice president of Google Cloud, insisted on stopping scanning user emails. According to a number of analysts, its influence on Google is gradually growing, and it is making increasingly important decisions. She began working at Green Corporation in 2015, having achieved considerable funding for her department during discussions with management. The company's goal seems to be to catch up and overtake Amazon and Microsoft.

As for the changes, Green described them in her own blog on Friday. She also announced that now the "cloud" division of the company operates more efficiently than before. This can be judged by the fact that revenue increased by 49%, to $ 3.09 billion in the last quarter. As for Gmail, the number of users of the service is more than 1.2 billion people.
