Great test thermos. Personal experience and tests for yourself

Winter came and the question arose of how to warm up. Coffee, tea or soup is what you need, and a thermos can help keep it hot. And I wouldn’t have been me if I hadn’t tested thermos flasks on the Russian market.

So this article was born. Which thermos to choose for car trips, take with you on a trip, go hunting, give a friend, an avid fisherman, and just buy a favorite, you can find out under the cut.

If you are too lazy to read, then you can scroll to the end and see all the same, but in the form of a video review.

To begin with, what is a thermos and why is it needed? According to Wikipedia, Thermos is a type of household heat-insulating dishes for long-term preservation of a higher or lower temperature of food compared to the ambient temperature. Simply put, it is the dishes that will allow after a while on the way to drink hot or eat cold ice cream in the heat.

All this is made possible by good insulation of the internal vessel from the external environment. And if a rather thick cork prevents the exchange of temperature from above, what helps to keep the temperature in the vessel itself? Moreover, most modern thermoses have a stainless steel metal flask. It became interesting to me and I carefully cut the thermos on the machine.

As can be seen in the picture, the device of the thermos is as simple as possible: the external protective case holds approximately the center of the metal flask. There is air between the wall and the casing, but it is also pumped out in order to reduce heat transfer - a tube is visible at the bottom, which, after evacuating the air, is clamped and sealed. This is the simplest type of modern thermos.

FACT: Thermos allows you to save. For example, having boiled a kettle once and pouring one mug, you left the rest of the water to cool in the kettle. If this water is immediately poured into a thermos, then the next time you want to drink hot, you can use a thermos. Each additional inclusion of a kettle is heat released into the atmosphere, as well as money released into the air.

And how would I have been an engineer if I hadn’t first developed a testing methodology? For me, it was important how many degrees lost the liquid in a thermos for the past time. Therefore, the result of each test is the delta between the initial and final temperatures.

Testing method

The first test emulated frequent use of a thermos: the temperature was measured immediately after pouring dishes with boiling water. The following measurements were carried out after 1, 3, 6, 10 hours. All data were recorded in a table that can be seen at the end of the material.

The second test simulates a situation when the thermos has to keep warm for a long time. Therefore, only three temperature measurements were made: at the time of boiling water, after 12 and after 24 hours. Thus, I obtained data on how generally a thermos can keep the temperature of a liquid per day.

All thermoses were tested under the same conditions at a temperature of about 0 degrees without wind.

What is interesting is that most of the heat loss occurs through the cork. For example, give the following photo

And I proceed to the tests and immediately distribute the thermoses in places.

An interesting example of Russian production - a thermos made in the Chelyabinsk region. Attracts design and brutality. The only such wide thermos with a volume of only 1 liter. The thermos has folding arms and side "legs" that prevent rolling from a horizontal surface. On the one hand, a large mug is convenient, and on the other, tea cools faster. The neck is not very wide, so it will not be possible to transport food. Open the cork is quite problematic. But there are attachments for any strap to wear a thermos on the shoulder. Unfortunately, the thermos showed very poor results in heat preservation.

+ Brutal design, stops against rolling off the table, a large cup-lid
- Large heat loss, hard to unscrew the cover

One of the most stylish thermos. Photo, perhaps, does not convey the attractive color that this thermos has. All the girls who saw the collection of thermos for the test marked this thermos as one of the most attractive. A small lid-mug is only one - this is not surprising, since the thermos is one-liter. Very interesting mechanism for access to water in the lid. Pressing a single button opens the valve. Pressing the valve closes it - you can even handle it with one hand. A narrow throat reduces heat loss, and the cork is easily unscrewed. Unfortunately, the high cost negates all possibilities of the thermos.

+ Stylish design, convenient access to water
- High price, lack of opportunity to fasten on the strap

Very popular among visitors to IKEA stores thermos. Attracts, first of all, with its low price - where else can you find a thermos for less than 600 rubles? But this is where its benefits end. Heat losses are extremely high - second place from the end. There is no possibility to fasten on the belt. And in terms of size, it overtook the Thermos FBB-1000, although their capacity is the same. What is nice, you can pour water without opening the thermos completely, but all thanks to special grooves on the sides of the cork. Opposite the slots are the arrows, so as not to spill liquid on the sides. During the day, in the second test, the thermos lost almost 60 degrees, that is, the water was slightly warm. In general, the choice is just for the price.

+ Low price, easy to use.
- High heat loss, large size

This thermos with its coloring reminded me of the front door. But there it is made to improve vandal resistance, here it is used only in decorative quality. Thermos is a cylinder, without rounding the ends. The lid is a mug without a handle, and the cork is made similar to the previous model, that is, with grooves on the sides for access of air and liquid — you can pour the liquid without unscrewing the lid completely. The throat is relatively wide, but the volume is such that it is possible to carry there, basically, only liquid. As for the heat loss, the thermos kept around in the middle of all models. Strong middling.

+ Nice price, average heat loss, ease of use
- “Door” paint, cylinder with rectangular ends

This thermos is knocked out of a number of others primarily by its appearance. Immediately it becomes clear that this is not just another creation, but something special. Both the appearance and the functionality are somewhat different: take at least a handle that can be pressed to the body with brackets, and can move away for a comfortable grip on the handle. True pen and strives to fold when you pour from a full thermos in the cup. A cup is quite large and noticeable - also a plus. Reliable coating with hammer enamel will save the thermos in frequent travels. However, in the tests for heat loss, the thermos was rigidly held in 13th place. And the price for 1 liter of capacity is more than 3 thousand rubles - this is a lot. It is all the more surprising that a regular cork with grooves along the edges was used - the simplest solution was used in an expensive thermos.

+ Distinctive design, good coating with hammer enamel
- The handle and strives to fold when pouring

When I picked up this thermos for the first time, I immediately noticed how pleasant the non-slip coating was for my hand. The trouble is that when testing in the cold it turned out: this coating is dubbing and becomes completely non-elastic. Nevertheless, the thermos is worthy of attention: a small cup is just something to get drunk and not to get a drink. The narrow throat is closed with a stopper with a classic button-ring access mechanism for water - it is understandable even to those who see such a thermos for the first time. As for the heat loss, then in the 10-hour test the thermos was at the 9th place, but in the daily test - already at the 15. So it is worth taking it on small “forays”. However, the price is not bad for such a thermos.

+ Nice design, silicone non-slip coating, narrow throat, classic and reliable access to water
- Nonskid coating in the cold dubeet, a thermos has a large daily heat loss

Very nice thermos in terms of both design and ergonomics. It is worth noting that in addition to a mug, the second drinking bowl is also rarely found in liter thermoses. Orange color of both will not let them get lost in the snow or the ground. Manufacturers of stars from the sky are not enough, so we have a good workhorse: The classic form of the body, the classic mechanism of access to water - everything has been honed by generations. True, it is a pity that there is no provision for fastening the shoulder strap, but the thermos takes up less space in the backpack. In temperature tests the thermos also kept in the last five in both tests, so one should not expect miracles from it.

Interestingly the name of this thermos - attracts, I will not hide it. As for the design, it is a classic: black with silver. The coating looks strong, perhaps not paint, but enamel. The screw cap consists of two parts: a bigger cup and a smaller one. In this case, the second cup is not made in the form of a separate bowl, so it will not be lost when opening. Access to water without any mechanics: a classic cork with two slots on the sides. Special arrows show where the liquid will flow, so as not to burn yourself. In the tests for heat loss, the thermos kept well: 6 and 4 place for the 10-hour and 12-hour tests, respectively. And the price is nice.

+ Good design, two cups with a liter thermos, good temperature readings
- Cork without mechanics, there is no possibility to hang a thermos on the belt

Above 10 places began to appear thermos capacity of two liters. This is partly due to the fact that they store heat better, if only because more hot liquid is poured into them. Truth and heat dissipation area is increasing. The thermos has a plastic folding handle, special projections that prevent the thermos from rolling on a horizontal surface. The cup and bowl are included, and the lid is removed after a 45 degree rotation. To access the water unscrews the central part of the tube. By the way, unscrew it quite hard. The wide neck allows to transport not only liquids, but, for example, soup. It is possible to fasten the belt, but the fasteners are plastic and unique. Excellent temperature indicators - second place in both tests.

Almost the twin of the previous model. Thermos as well as the "Arctic" 205-2000 has a plastic folding handle and stops for laying on a horizontal surface. You can also fasten the strap to wear on the shoulder, but, again, it has its own unique plastic fasteners that are not sold at every corner. But in the opening of the lid the difference is immediately noticeable - it is necessary to make a full turn to remove the lid-mug. Under it is also a bowl for the second person. The mechanism of access to water is identical to the previous thermos - it is also not easy to unscrew the cork. But there is a noticeable difference in temperature tests: it did not rise above 7th place.

You would think that this thermos is a clone of the two previous ones. Outwardly, they are somewhat similar: a folding plastic handle and again a unique shoulder strap fastening. There is also an emphasis that the thermos does not roll on a horizontal surface. But after removing the cover, the metamorphosis begins. Cork is noticeably different from previous models. Unique and very interesting access to water: first you need to remove the metal check, then press the button and the flip cover will give access to the contents. Moreover, the manufacturer has provided a mechanism to facilitate the smooth flow of water: there is a special air channel on the back of the cork. Such care is pleasant, but the check cannot be opened without removing the gloves. By the way, the cork is unscrewed quite simply, and a wide throat will allow you to carry with you not only liquid.

+ Good performance in temperature tests, it is convenient to pour the liquid without "bulkov", wide throat
- To check in gloves to remove almost unreal, high price

But this is already a direct clone of thermos flasks that are on the 8th and 9th place, but with a different name. It is not clear who pulled the design away from anyone, but this thermos was a little more heat resistant. Although it was a “photo finish”, when the difference in final temperatures differed by less than a degree, but the Biostal NGP-2000P overtook its competitors in price. So, we have a two-liter thermos with a folding plastic handle and a shoulder strap with plastic fasteners. A cup and a bowl will allow you to drink tea together. A wide throat will allow not only liquids to be transported, but a cork rather tight, as before. To open the lid, you need to make a full turn.

Surprisingly, several one-liter thermos crept into the top five winners. Let's start with the Kovea KDW-1000 WT. He immediately stands out from the rest because of his own case. This is not just a cover with a zipper, but a foil cover with a handle. That is, it is designed to increase the time it takes to keep the temperature in a thermos. The focus was a success and the measurement results are quite interesting. Yes, and on design and ergonomics, this only affected well. Thermos has one cup-mug and a narrow throat, so the heat loss is small. The mechanism of access to water has already met and is made in the form of a valve with a button and a closing ring. A small price, good performance and a thermos Kovea KDW-1000 WT among the top five winners.

Curious name of the manufacturer and no less attractive design. Thermos immediately stands on the shelf of the store and in the hands of the owner. Let's start with ergonomics: a folding rubberized grip that does not slip in your hands and does not take up space during transportation. There are small stops so that the thermos does not roll on the table. Open the lid-glass and see an interesting mechanism for access to water. The valve opens by pressing the red button, while the hole is extremely small, which keeps the contents warm for longer. The valve closes with another button or when it is covered with a cup. But most of all the Teflon coating of the flask was struck from the inside - it washes very easily, although doctors have doubts about Teflon. Apparently, therefore, the price is markedly different from the other liter models. But the temperature indicators are very good.

+ Excellent design, excellent ergonomics, easy access to water, easy-to-clean teflon coating, good temperature readings
- Price, dubious security Teflon

The two-liter Zojirushi SF-CC20-XA thermos deservedly ranked third in our test. Here we see the previous model in the appropriate scale. Large thermos with elastic folding handle and the possibility of wearing a belt. By the way, fasteners allow you to use absolutely any belt of suitable width. The mug and the bowl are also quite large. You can pour the drink without opening the button thanks to the “proprietary” mechanism with two buttons. By the way, the valve closes, if you just put a mug on a thermos. The flask is covered with teflon from the inside, and the throat is wide enough to carry not only drinks, but also borscht. In temperature tests, this thermos was expectedly good. Only the high price is distressing, but sometimes you don’t feel sorry for any money.

This thermos looks "tourist". I do not know why, but when you look at it, such an association emerges. The thermos is covered with hammer enamel, resistant to chipping. The rubberized handle is pleasant to the touch and does not slip in your hand. It is immediately noticeable that the lid consists of two parts; these are cups with handles, which is really convenient. Cork without any mechanics, just grooves on the sides, allows you to pour the liquid without unscrewing it completely. Interestingly, the bottom of the thermos is also twisted and there is a container with two zones for bulk products: tea and sugar, for example. Attention to trivia worthy of second place. It is a pity that there is no fastening for the strap. Otherwise, the thermos is really worthy of second place.

+ Good design, thoughtful ergonomics, good temperature indicators, reasonable price.

The first place went to a thermos with the name Tigr or Tiger MHK-A200 XC. Let's start with an external examination: a rather interesting platform in which two handles are folded: this mechanism is somewhat reminiscent of Amet's thermos. On the opposite side there is a pair of plastic legs so that the thermos does not roll on a horizontal surface. Immediately draws attention to the presence of the handle on the lid-circle. The lid itself opens after turning to 45 degrees - it is much more convenient than doing a full turn. In addition to the circle goes a bowl. To pour the liquid just press the button, and you can close the valve by pressing the ring. The cork is very wide, since the neck is made almost the entire width of the flask. That is why it is convenient to carry in it not only drink, but also food. On the sides there are "ears" for fastening the belt - this is the only thermos that is in an upright position when transported on a shoulder strap.Well, in conclusion, it should be noted that the Tiger MHK-A200 XC won in all temperature tests.

+ Excellent ergonomics, nice design, comfortable shoulder strap, cup with handle, wide neck, excellent performance in temperature tests
- Price

Tips for owners of thermoses:

1. In order for the thermos to keep its temperature longer, the flask must first be heated. That is, pour boiling water (it is possible and completely), let stand for a couple of minutes, and then pour the final boiling water. So you will not leave the precious heat to warm the flask.
2. Frequent opening of the plug results in faster cooling of the contents.
3. From a small mug you will drink a hot drink longer than from a large one.
4. A large throat of a thermos will allow you to take hot meals with you, like soup.
5. If the thermos is not planned to open often, then it can be insulated - this will prolong the cooling time of the contents.

Tables and graphs

It is rather curious to observe in the diagrams how the temperature of the liquid in the thermos decreases after a while. I enclose two graphs of temperature loss in tests. The first graph shows how the temperature decreased during measurements after 1, 3, 6 and 10 hours after pouring boiling water into thermoses.

The second graph also shows a decrease in temperature. At this time, measurements after pouring were carried out only twice: after 12 and 24 hours.

As a result of the tests, the Tiger MHK-A200 XC thermos won. It became interesting to me, which contributed to the victory and I decided to cut it. But the two-liter thermos saw was pitiful, so I found a liter counterpart and sawed along. And that's what was discovered:

There is a layer of copper foil between the body and the wall of the stainless steel flask. That is, in addition to vacuuming, as in other thermoses, Tiger added thermo-reflective foil to their thermoses. The idea worked!

It's time to sum up. To begin with, the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive thermos in our today's test is almost 1000%, that is, the range of prices on the market is very large. Also there is a great variation in the quality of these thermos flasks. And if the most affordable thermos for the day lost almost 60 degrees from the original temperature, then the best, but not the most expensive, a little more than 34 degrees. Agree, a noticeable difference. Therefore, it is better to rely on someone else's experience and avoid losing money.

Proceeding from my own experience, I would say that hot drinking significantly adds strength when working in the cold, so I am ready to invest in a good thermos. Ergonomics and design also play an important role, because it is more difficult to unscrew the cork with gloves, rather than just press a button and pour a glass of hot tea.

As for the top three winners, two out of three are two-liter models. And indeed, a liter thermos is enough for two for a good lunch. And if you want to drink several times or consumers more than two, then you need a larger thermos.

Do not save on yourself, choose the right thermos and insulate well. The winter is coming!
